It was a day on which Chartered women were inspired and challenged to appreciate all their blessings!
On 29 October, a team of Chartered staff spent the day with 10 young women battling the effects of their life-threatening diseases, and the treatment they are undergoing. It was finally the day they had all been anticipating – the Queen for a Day hosted by Reach for a Dream and supported by the proceeds of Kim Potgieter’s book: Retiremeant: Get More Meaning from your Money.
Three Chartered crew reflect on the day and their feelings resulting from their interaction with these brave young women.
The Chartered team of ladies awaited the arrival of 10 girls between the ages of 8 and 13 with a terminally ill condition … we did not know what to expect.
While waiting, we helped with the balloons and had our own faces painted by the make-up artist. Eight girls meekly walked in; some started painting their fairy print bags, whilst others had their faces painted and nails polished.
We did not ask about their conditions, but just wanted to pamper them and take them away from their reality for just a short while. The toll on some of the girls could be seen as they were quite tired during the session. After the painting, make-up and nails, we indulged in a delightful lunch. The Clearwater beauty queen showed them how to walk down the red carpet to be crowned and sit on the chair to be photographed. They all seemed to have enjoyed the pampering, and so did we. How their faces lit up while they painted their bags, when they looked at their painted faces in the mirror, as they
walked down the red carpet, waving like a Queen … these smiles brought tears to my eyes. And I thought to myself how grateful I must be for things in MY life.
When you find yourself in the position to help someone, be happy and feel blessed because God is answering that person’s prayer through you. Our purpose on earth is not to get lost in the dark but to be a light to others, so that they may find way through us……(if it means just to be a Queen for a Day). Francisca Botha
Queen for a day was Chartered making the hearts of those girls happy and making them feel special and loved. More importantly, it was spending time with them, bonding, and showing an interest in who they are, giving them our personal attention and making sure that they know they are all special, BEAUTIFUL and loved.
