Redefining success and purpose at 56

with Cheryl Jones

Cheryl Jones calls it “version 5.6” – the year she decided to study again at 56, confront imposter syndrome head-on, and expand on a career she had built over 25 years, adding a new focus that would take her work to the next level.

Cheryl had already achieved so much. She’d built a successful wellness business, travelled the world learning from top nutrition experts, and inspired hundreds of clients to take better care of their health. But in midlife, Cheryl felt a nudge she couldn’t ignore. There was more she wanted to learn, more impact she wanted to make – and it meant stepping into an entirely new space.

“It’s now or never. Why not me? Why not now?”

That one question became the turning point.

The nudge to recalibrate

Cheryl’s work had always been about helping people live healthier, more energised lives. But she kept seeing a missing link: the mind-body connection.

In searching for the missing puzzle pieces and a more holistic way to help her clients, Cheryl enrolled at the Institute for the Psychology of Eating and graduated as a Certified Mind Body Eating Coach. This transition wasn’t about leaving product sales behind – she still offers her wellness products – but about expanding her business to also charge for her coaching expertise. It meant positioning herself as an expert consultant, creating a new income stream alongside her product sales, with a new focus on corporate wellness, her popular “Me First” talks, and a growing social media presence.

The vulnerabilities along the way

Like most midlife transitions, this shift didn’t come without its challenges.

  • Imposter syndrome: “I compared myself to people on social media with huge followings and advanced tech skills. I had to meet with myself and decide to walk my talk and trust my own path.”
  • Fear of judgement: “I worried what family and friends would think when I put myself out there. But I realised there are people who love my message and how I share it. And that’s who I’m here for.”

It was a conscious decision to let go of worrying about other people’s opinions and courageously step into her own power.

Redefining success in midlife

When Cheryl first started her business, success meant contributing financially while being present for her young children. Today, it’s about Time Freedom, Location Freedom and Money Freedom – doing work she loves, with people she chooses, from anywhere in the world.

“I want to make a difference, and every night as I put my head on the pillow, I ask myself –
Did I make a difference today?”

Money mindset

A key shift for Cheryl has been expanding her business from product sales to also charging for her time, knowledge, talks, and consulting services.

“I believe that money is an energy exchange, and time and services can be charged for.”

Cheryl credits her healthy relationship with money and intentional financial planning with giving her the confidence to make this change.

On living purposefully

For Cheryl, purpose is about impact: doing something that feels right, energises you, and makes a difference.

Her advice for anyone searching for purpose?

“Explore new things. Trust that if it’s meant for you, purpose will find you.”

At this stage of life, alignment is everything – not just with passion and purpose, but with the people you choose to work with.

A Light-or-Heavy rule for life decisions

A tool Cheryl uses for every decision, big or small, is asking, “Does this feel light or heavy?”

  • If it feels light, it’s a YES.
  • If it feels heavy, it’s a NO.

It’s a practice she and her husband use for business decisions, life choices, and even social plans.

Cheryl’s top 3 Mind & Body Wellness Tips

  1. Listen to your body wisdom – it’s always speaking to you.
  2. Make small, consistent tweaks – small, consistent changes become sustainable habits.
  3. Ask for help – working with a coach to help you unpack and process food and body challenges can be life-changing.

Kim’s Reflection

Cheryl’s journey is a wonderful reminder that a midlife transition isn’t always about starting over. Often, it’s about fine-tuning your life so it aligns with who you are today and the difference you still want to make.

She’s shown such courage in letting go of self-doubt, trusting her gut, and saying yes to what feels right. These are the choices that allow wisdom, experience, and purpose to meet in the most powerful way.

Midlife invites us to pause, reassess, and step forward with intention. Cheryl has done just that – and I couldn’t be prouder of the way she’s embraced this chapter of her life.
